Estancia Santa Rita
LODGES
"If adventure has a final and all-embracing motive, it is surely this: we go out because it is our nature to go out, to climb mountains, and to paddle rivers, to fly to the planets and plunge into the depths of the oceans… When man ceases to do these things, he is no longer man."
-Wilfrid Noyce-
Santa Rita, Argentina
One of the most famous estancias in Argentina, and certainly one of the best places to find ducks & perdiz is Estancia Santa Rita. This farm was a wooded wilderness before the turn of the century, when a French cattle baron relocated to Argentina and cleared the land and built this beautiful estate. It reminds us of an anti-bellam Southern plantation in the States, but instead of an avenue of oaks leading to the main house, there is an avenue of giant eucalyptus trees. All over 100 years old, they stand as a perfect gateway to this grand house. Santa Rita is best known for it’s ducks, and there are plenty there. Just check out the gallery of photos from our many years of entertaining clients here. The house is still owned by the grandson of the originator, and the operation is managed by Jorge Trucco, one of Argentina’s legendary fly-fishermen and outdoorsmen. There are plenty ducks here, rosybills, Chilean wigeon, yellow-billed pintails, cinnamon teal, specked teal, silver teal, white-cheeked pintails, spot-winged teal, and a couple species of smaller divers. This estancia is about a 5 hour drive from Buenos Aires, so we can get you comfortably there in our professionally driven van, while you take a nap, or via charter aircraft. The surrounding grainfields provide good hunting for perdiz, the grouse like bird that we hunt like quail. The are actually relatives of the ostrich family, and come in three varieties. Most of smaller than a grouse, but larger than a quail, but the red breasted variety is at least the size of a pheasant.
